From Marketing and Warehousing to Senior SAP Consultant: Matija's Story

A marketing degree from the Faculty of Economics, a first job in the regional marketing team of a large multinational company: everything looked settled. Then, after only a year, a move into sales and a path that nobody could have predicted at the time.
Today, Matija Gregur is a Senior SAP Business One Consultant at Notus. He got there thanks to work in very different industries, a sentence that changed the way he thinks, and plenty of projects that shaped him along the way.
Years That Had No Obvious Common Thread
It all began in 2011 at Nestlé Adriatic: marketing, then sales, master data administration in SAP ERP, reporting, timelines and tracking of deliveries. This is where he first saw how much the "cleanliness" of basic data affects the planning and execution of business decisions.
Next came selling home appliances at Candy Hoover Zagreb, followed by a move to construction tools and equipment at Hilti Croatia. He stayed at Hilti for a relatively short time, because he was offered the chance to take part in a CRM implementation project at ista d.o.o., a member of an international group specializing in energy and water consumption management and metering, while continuing to work in sales.
In the meantime, the technical team had shrunk. He had already shown an aptitude for technology and problem-solving, so he took over technical support for external installers, and then procurement and the warehouse as well.
Looking back, each of these changes might seem like a mere stopover, but each one was in fact a springboard for what came next.
The Advice That Changed Everything
Somewhere in the middle of those years, one of his then-managers said something that he still carries with him:
"If you want to be a good manager or consultant one day, you need to get to know as many aspects of business as possible, across different departments and positions."
From that moment on, every job stopped being just a job. It became a chance to see the business from one more angle, in one more sector.
Entering the SAP World
All that experience eventually came together in a role as Junior SAP Business One Consultant at mStart. He mastered the system quickly, and the road from junior to senior was marked by numerous projects and a constant desire to learn.
One project stands out in particular: the first one he led as a consultant from start to finish, an implementation at a pharmaceutical company. It meant eight months commuting between Zagreb and Mokrice, preparing validation documentation for HALMED, and working with people whose openness and willingness to change made the whole process far easier.
"That feeling when you know you've done something well, and maybe solved a problem users have been dealing with for a long time. That's still what I enjoy most today."
The Moment That Showed Him He Could Do More
A special moment came when he programmed an automation on his own for the first time and successfully put it into production.
"Well, I'm not a programmer, but apparently I can do that too."
A small remark, but one of those small, personal victories you never forget.
Today, at Notus
His path eventually led him to Notus, where he continues to do what suits him best: listening to users, understanding their challenges and working with them to build processes that make sense. His job has long been about more than the system. It is more about people.

"SAP Business One might be 'just' a program, but it is definitely not just an IT tool. It's the foundation for reporting, for deciding on future investments, and perhaps even for transforming a company's entire business."
That is why he thinks as much about the people who use these systems as about the systems themselves: how to communicate changes to them clearly and on time, how to prepare them, and how to show them that everyone will ultimately benefit from the new way of working.
What Set Him Apart
It wasn't technical knowledge. That comes with time, experience and every new project. What set him apart was his breadth, and his habit of turning every seemingly minor experience into a tool he would need one day.
Matija has a clear message for anyone just starting to build a career at the intersection of business, logistics and technology:
"It's important to go through as many different examples as possible and understand the needs of different users, departments and business sectors. Experience is what you should always base your own development on. Learning never stops; there will always be a new situation, a new challenge to solve."
Few people would have recognized a future Senior SAP Consultant at the start of this journey. For Matija, it took time, several sectors and one good piece of advice. Today he passes that advice on to his colleagues at Notus, as openly as he once received it.
